My Sister’s Keeper
September 9th, 2010
Now it’s after Labor Day and everyone is back in school. This is a very exciting time because whether they admit it or not, most students are ready to get back to the Fall routine. Sure the Summer is fun, but most of their social life surrounds school…
I think about the new Freshman entering college. The freedom from the rules of home can be a little overwhelming even for the most disciplined co-ed. Not having your mom or dad telling you when you can or can’t go out and party leads to quick “swim or sink” kinda lessons. Either you decide to do your homework and prepare for class or you go to yet another all night party. You do everything you can to excel in your classes or you fail. Decisions, decisions.
The problem is the decisions don’t stop there!
Every year young college women are raped. It has been projected in some studies that before the end of their college career, as many as 20-25% of women will experience rape or sexual assault! These numbers are staggering and if accurate, mean many many rapes and other acts of sexual violence go unreported each year! Read the rest of this entry »
Gratitude!!
August 30th, 2010
Today I received the final numbers from Second Harvest regarding our June 19th Health Fair and Food Drive. The donations we collected from our Winn-Dixie barrels and patients yielded 662 pounds of food! According to Second Harvest, this translated into over 509 meals served to people who otherwise might have gone hungry!
I am soo grateful to everyone who participated in the food collection and health fair especially the staff of Valentine Medical Center! The weeks of work paid off and we were able to help our neighbors! Life is good!
One at a Time Please
August 4th, 2010
Everyone is busy now. It takes time to balance family, friends, and work and even more time to figure out how to do it! So what do we do?
Multitasking became very popular, but the more I think about it the more I realize you can only actually do one thing at a time! At first it seemed like a good idea to drive, talk on the phone, and listen to the radio all at the same time. That is until more and more traffic accidents occurred leading to entire ad campaigns against these practices by some really famous and influencial people. Ok so now what? Lose it!!
July 21st, 2010
Ok. We get A LOT of patients in the office who come in primarily for weight loss. I think what happens is people try EVERYTHING! I have heard about a cabbage diet, a soup diet, a watermelon diet, a cabbage soup diet, the list goes on and on. This doesn’t even include all of the “specialty diets” like Jenny Craig, WeightWatchers, or online food delivery services which can get pretty expensive! So what’s a person to do especially at this time when every penny counts?
Good health is not a “Luxury Item”
People say to me all the time that they just can’t afford to eat right. Fresh fruits and vegetables are expensive and they don’t have time to go to the store everyday. No problem. Everyone is looking at ways to save their family as much money as possible. We are all busy but we have to make OURSELVES the priority! It is very possible to live a good life and love good food. You should do this every day! Read the rest of this entry »
Helping Our Neighbors
June 9th, 2010
The oil spill in the gulf is the largest tragedy of its kind to date. Wildlife and ways of life have been completely devastated. It is painful to witness the depth of the tragedy unfold. The similarities between what we are living through today and what we lived through after Hurricane Katrina is not lost on anyone. It is amazing that not five years after THE natural disaster, we have THE man-made disaster to clean up. But here we are… Read the rest of this entry »
